Valentine dinner at Langkawi's

Ahaha...no time tunnel to zip and reach Langkawi and back to SF. This is a Malaysian restaurant that is outside of San Mateo. Abt the most authentic Malaysian tasting restaurant in and around SF. Cldn't go eat at any other place, incl chinese becos it is all full due to Valentine. The folks are all from Kampar, though the only one of them born in the States is a 13 year old girl. The rest have migrated since a long time and when they go back to Malaysia, they cannot remember what it was like before. They started in New York and due to weather conditions decide to move to SF. We had fish head assam curry, kangkong and satay. Tastes good. You never realise how much you miss the spicy food till you start getting to taste some out here. Then the pulut tai tai, the nyonya kueh with the kaya. Because they use Thai glutinous rice, therefore the kuih was softer, but it tastes just as good. Then mo mo cha cha..nope not any new dessert invented. Its bo bo cha cha, its just that they spell and call it that way in States. After a very hearty dinner with Edna, Wei and Justin, i was so full i cld not get up. Best of all Justin gave us a treat from his ang pow money. Good boy! Am so proud of him, though he is an ABC, he sure knows how to treat and respect elders. And before dinner, i was dropped off at San Mateo downtown by Edna and told to walk the streets and see the shops. Very interesting. A lot of manicure shops becos the folks that stay here are the rich folks, who like the warmer weather. Each condo unit going easily for more than $1mil. And there are pet shops..everything catering to the elderly. I decided to spend more time at Draegers. This is an institution by itself. A grocer that started and grew and expanded into the gourmet, good food, accessible specialised grocery. Walked upstairs first to have a look at all the cooking wares they got. Everything you wld like to have in your kitchen as a serious cook, is available. They even have a cooking school and a special restaurant that is available through bookings by selected chefs. I took a peep into the cooking school, no luck. No lessons on so i cldnt see anything. The all the cooking books, toiletries, aromatheraphy. Down the stairs into the major food hall. They have wine cellars, special fluid provided so you can chill your purchased bottle and take home. Plus some very special wines, incl balsimic vinegars under lock and key becos it is priceless. Next the bakery...There is a ticketing system provided, so if you want to make sure you get served, you pull out from the ticket dispenser and they will call your number. Boy, if you think it is an ordinary bakery within a grocery shop, you are mistaken. The line is so long and plus it was Valentine's Day, the number had already gone up to 90. Wanted to snack as i was hungry but unfortunately all the staff was so tied up no one was at the coffee counter. So picked up a bottle of juice plus a pack of lemon sliced cakes. The cakes was so yummy i had more than 5 pieces. Before i cld gorge myself silly, Edna picked me for the dinner. All in all, a very special Valentine's Day celebrated with Edna, Wei and Justin. A celebration of 35 years of friendship with Edna, which has withstood time and distance.
