Humongous

My order of quarter pork ribs with chicken. If i didn't eat for a day, i probably may have been able to eat half of it. The white portion is the potato and then there is the salad on the side. The The American slang word for very large, enormous. Isn't it true of this serving of chicken with pork ribs? Its a one person serving. Of course there was no way i could finish it. When it was served, one look at it already had me psyched full. Just that you can see, the serving was that huge, here is another picture of Brenda's order which was the same. This meal was ordered at The Meat Co at Monte Casino Johannesburg. I ordered this on my 2nd visit there. On the first visit, i ordered a 200 gm steak with roquefort & pear salad. The Meat Co is a very unique experience because it offers steaks from 200 gm to 750gm. In addition to its steak offerings, this restaurant also serves a unique salad..the Biltong salad. Biltong is a kind of dried meat, similiar to beef jerky in the States. Many types of meat is used to make biltong in South Africa from beef to game to commercially reared ostrich. Biltong word is orginated from the Dutch word bil ("rump") and tong ("strip"or "tongue").

Biltong differs from Jerky in two distinct ways:

  • The meat used can be much thicker, typically biltong meat is cut in strips approx 1 inch wide - but can be thicker. Jerky is always very thin meat.
  • The vinegar in biltong has at least as much to do with the preservation of the meat as the salt and drying process as it chemically 'cooks' the meat, further helping to preserve as well as adding texture and flavour. Jerky is traditionally just salted and dried.
The unique experience of dining at The Meat Co in Monte Casino is that the Monte Casino has created a Tuscan feel environment, with retail shops, restaurants and eateries wrapped within its casino floor. It is similiar to the environment re created in The Palazzo, Ceasers Palace in Vegas except that the Monte Casino is smaller in scale.
